Forest fires are a major recurring issue in Nepal, and a reliable and timely fire detection and monitoring system is essential for forest fire management. Given their large-area repetitive coverage, satellite data are helpful for near real-time fire detection, monitoring, and burnt area assessment. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors onboard NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites are already used extensively to detect and monitor forest fires across the globe.
The Forest Fire Detection and Monitoring System in Nepal provides historical and near-real time information on forest fire incidents using data from NASA’s MODIS and VIIRS sensors. This system includes a damage assessment form that allows registered DoFSC officials to capture data on reported fire incidences, estimated damage, and fatalities from forest fires.
